The SCT'61 Blog
Welcome to the Site Blog
For those who are wondering (or maybe even starting gently to mutter), a Blog is defined as a Web site or page on which an individual or group of users record opinions, information, etc. on a regular basis
(or as a verb, to add new material to or regularly update a blog
I can't think of a better word to describe what I've meant to do for sometime which is somewhere to record and bring to everyone's notice information on a day-to-day basis about the SCT'61 web site, whether it's what's been added recently, how to make the most of it, how to use the site or problems that have occurred.
At one time I maintained a "What's New" page but that was a bit limiting and the site was a lot quieter and additions much fewer then (but you can still see it here
if you're interested).
Hope you find it useful.

After nearly nine years hosting the site on the same server, I need to move it because it's getting a bit old and the hosting company are threatening to stop supporting it. So I've moved to a new company (and saved quite a bit of money) and the site will be moved across during the day.
There will be a period when you can't post messages but hopefully not too long.

From time to time a photo arrives which for me has that extra special something. One of these which I've added to the site today is from John Boylett's visit to Dumfries in 1962 of former East Yorkshire Leyland PS1, by then with local operator Carruthers, as it backs into its allotted space in Whitesands, Dumfries.
Thursday 16th January 2014
After 10+ years, I've changed the site home page to among other things take advantage of wider screens that most people have.
The old layout has been there since at least the end of 2002 which is a long time ( see here
if you're interested, the original layout is here
. ) !
Friday 10th January 2014
Been rather neglecting the blog, but worth recording adding to the site the last of the photos that John Boylett took on his Scottish trip in July 1959, taking in Perth on the 24th, Inverness the 24th and 25th, Glasgow on the 26th, and finally Airdrie and Hamilton on the 29th.
Thursday 28th November 2013
Discussion about recovery vehicles reminded me that I'd been sitting (but only for 9 and a bit years!) on a photo taken by John Whiteley of the Hebble Bedford with body utilising mainly Harrington Cavalier parts.
I've lost touch with John but I am in his debt - he saw some of my own Yorkshire photos posted on the site, was prompted to send me his to add to the site which were then seen by John Kaye which in turn prompted him to start contributing photos, starting the snowball rolling.
Tuesday 26th November 2013
Sadly another memorial gallery, this time of photos taken by the late David Manning, courtesy of Brian Pask and the Essex Transport Group.

Wednesday 30th October 2013
John has realised that there were some scanning problems with the recent set of photos that John Boylett took in Peterborough which resulted in the photos appearing quite "blocky" so he's kindly rescanned them and I'll replace them on the site over the next week or so.
They are still not perfect because the film was very much under-exposed and there is also some deterioration in parts of the film, particularly at the edges, but they are definitely worth having. The conditions must have been difficult for John B. with the bright January sunshine.
Saturday 26th October 2013
Following some recent discussions about the 30' prototype Bristol LDLs, a photo of the sole LDL6G in the Notts & Derby fleet.
Saturday 26th October 2013
A few small changes to the Map screen for finding pictures based on where they were taken.
There are now links to this page and the Search page on the site home page so you won't need to remember the page names. The address of the map page has changed, it's now simply http://www.sct61.org.uk/map
Also if you change the location of a bus photo, this should appear immediately on the map (except our old friend the browser cache may interfere)
The search page also has an extra thing you can search on, the year the bus (or trolley or tram) was new. Normally if a bus was rebodied, the new date is the date the chassis was new. These dates are certainly not 100% accurate for various reasons, let me know of any glaring errors
Friday 25th October 2013
After claims of discrimination against Oldham, I've added a photo index page for Seddon
Also, following discussion of the bodybuilding side, I've also changed the body builder entry to "Seddon/Pennine Coachcraft"
Tuesday 22nd October 2013
Like this photo, a very busy scene at Worswick Street Bus Station, Newcastle
Friday 18th October 2013
Recent discussions about running out of old photos have obviously been taken to heart because today and yesterday I've had 58 photos sent in plus another 54 better quality rescans of photos we've already got on the site. A lot but certainly not all are down to Paul H's new scanner.
My usual approach of adding a related batch of photos each day is a bit overwhelmed so instead I've added the pick of each set of submissions.
Thursday 17th October 2013
Continuing John Boylett's visit to Glasgow in July 1959 (and before that Inverness), a selection of Lawson single and double deckers in Dundas Street.
You may have also noticed a fairly major exercise I've done of attaching a short name to each photo which then shows up on the message board titles or on the map. Fortunately I was able to automate the job so I didn't need to type in 10,000 odd fleet names and numbers although I then did discover a number of photos that weren't in the indexes
Wednesday 2nd October 2013
The long promised page that shows on a map the position of all the photos that we've tagged so far ...Try here
Click on one of the markers and you should see a list of photos at that location, you can then click on one to see the photo.
There are a few caveats which I'll tidy up later, it only shows photos dated 1995 and before, a crude measure to not overload the map with rally photos. Also the map does not regenerate automatically if you add the location of another photo or correct an existing location. Where buses have been marked as only 30 to 60 feet apart then the map shows them in one location.
Finally it seems to crash the browser on my iPad but I don't think that's anything I've done wrong.
Sunday 29th September 2013
The promised set of photos from the Seaton Tramway, the good weather this summer unfortunately didn't quite hold out for Brian
Saturday 28th September 2013
A nice set of photos taken by Brian and Ken at last Saturday's Kingsbridge Running Day. You can see them all in the 2013 Rally and Events Gallery
Friday 27th September 2013
A bit of self-indulgence, I came across the Wayback machine website again a few days ago, I've used it before but forgotten all about it.
What the site does is periodically archive websites and to my amazement they have a copy of the site from the 3rd October 1999 - its here
- when the site just had my Southend Corporation and Eastern National photos.
You can see all the archives here for the original web address
and here for the current web address.
Thursday 26th September 2013
Just added the last photo from John Boylett reel 37, the visit he made to Peterborough in January 1958, 34 photos but one was a duplicate. Apparently there are 21 more photos he took on the visit on the next reel which we'll add a bit later.
Monday 24th September 2013
Not sure if anyone's noticed but the button that shows the location on the Ordnance Survey 1:25000 maps, 1937-61, hasn't been working properly - it's been showing a different map although you could then view the 1:25000 map from a selection on the left of the screen.
Anyway, I've found another site that shows the same map and I can choose which map I want, plus the added advantage that I can show a marker on the map of where we reckon the bus, tram or trolley was.
These are my favourite maps, as an example click on the picture on the left, click show location and then "Show 1937-61 1:25000 OS Map" to see what I mean.
You can also choose other historic maps, the 1923 half inch map shows just how much has been built on since then (but then it was 90 years ago)
Saturday 14th September 2013
Two new operators on the website in the same photo, Longland of Crowland (and four others taken the same day by John B) and it's former owner, Fisons Pest Control who bought it new.
Friday 13th September 2013
About time I changed the photos at the top of the homepage so out go the Reliances and in come a selection of Atlanteans.
Wednesday 11th September 2013
I knew it was a mistake calling it a "daily" blog.
A taste of the next set of John Boylett's photos, a day trip to Peterborough, featuring Eastern Counties of course, with support from OK Motor Services, Delaine, Longland, Cream Bus Service and more.
Sunday 8th September 2013

Saturday 7th September 2013
Added a set of photos from Barry N, mainly from his collection, of the earlier days of Timpsons - all the photos for them are here
, as well as this very atmospheric photo he took in Hastings to go with two that John Boylett took there in early 1959 including this one
Friday 6th September 2013

You can see all Tony's photos so far here
Thursday 5th September 2013

Also a set of photos taken at the "minature" tramway in Eastbourne in the 1960s to go with the ones we had already - see them all here
Tuesday, 3rd September 2013
Unusually no xx years ago photos today.
It's not strictly true because only older pictures are displayed (otherwise on certain days it would be swamped by rally pictures), a more recent photo taken 22 years ago is this ex-Eastern National FLF in the US.
You can always check for photos taken on certain days by going to the Search screen
and entering e.g. "3 Sep" in the "Photo date taken" field (you can also search for photos taken in a certain month e.g. "sep 1982" which should also find those photos where only the month and not the exact day is known)
