Barton Transport W963, a Daimler CJ charabanc, the chassis having been acquired from an unknown source and the body being a replica built by Barton in 1952/53 to represent their first vehicle that inaugurated the Long Eaton to Nottingham service.

Barton 386, WE4373, a Leyland TD1 new in 1929, ex Sheffield via Cleethorpes. To Barton 1940, rebodied Duple L27/28F in February 1942 with a transverse staircase forward of the entrance, one of 27 vehicles rebodied at the same time based on the design of four TD5s built before the war.

New in March 1935 as Barton 199 with a Duple DP39F body, Leyland LT7 Lion BAL399 received a new Duple DP39F body in July 1942, the body being to pre-war standards with a few 'utility' features. In November 1952 it was fitted with a Leyland 8.6 litre oil engine and in June 1953 it received the 1948 Duple C35F body from Leyland PS1/1 JRR 919 and was renumbered 539 taking the number of the donated body.

Barton, Chilwell 816, BRM596, which had been acquired from Cumberland, Whitehaven in May 1959, was a Leyland TD4 which, when new in October 1936, had a Massey L27/26R body, and was numbered 132.

5. BVO453
Barton 253, BVO453, was the second of sixteen Leyland LT7 Lions with Duple DP39F bodies new in March 1936. It received a new Burlingham B36F body in 1943 using seats from the original body and was further rebodied in late 1948 with a Duple C39F body, being fitted with a Leyland 8.6 litre oil engine in 1950. Withdrawn in September 1960 it was one of four used as store sheds by Barton and was scrapped in August 1963.

Barton 347, EVO711, was one of four Leyland TD5s delivered in 1939 with Duple L27/26F bodies which were the forerunners of the large fleet of Duple bodied Leyland PD1s delivered after the war.

New as Ribble 2043 in March 1939 with a Burlingham L27/26R body RN8608, a Leyland TD5, was rebodied in 1950 with an 8'0" wide Alexander L27/28R body. It was acquired by Barton in July 1961 and numbered 918.

Acquired from West Riding, Wakefield 564 in October 1950 Barton 611, HL9925, a Leyland TD7 with a Roe L24/24R body had been new in December 1941 with the standard pre-war body. It was withdrawn in September 1960 and was scrapped in October.

Originally West Riding, Wakefield 568 new in May 1942, Barton 613, HL9944, had a Roe L27/28R body to early wartime utility specifications on its Leyland TD7 chassis and was withdrawn in April 1959 resulting in the "NOT LICENSED" notice in the windscreen.

Barton 431, GAL390, a Guy Arab with Duple L27/28R body new in June 1943. It was withdrawn in November 1960 and scrapped the following March.

Like a number of companies in the fifties, Barton rebuilt a number of Leyland Tigers some of which received double deck bodies by Willowbrook. Seen at the 2011 Kirkby Stephen rally is Barton 782, WAL782, which was new to Barton in 1948 as a saloon. It was rebuilt in 1957.

Barton 630, LNN886, was a new Leyland PS2/3 the chassis being extended and converted to PS2/12A standards by Barton to take the 30' Beccols FC43F body, entering service in June 1950. Withdrawn in March 1963, it was scrapped in May.

Fitted with a Barton FDP43F body and entering service in May 1952, Barton 658, NAL334, had a Barton BTS/1 chassis reconstructed from Bolton 17, WH6859, Leyland TD4 for the front end and Burnley 71, HG2702, Leyland TD3 for the rear end. It was withdrawn in September 1960 and scrapped in July 1961.

Barton 596, NNN80, a Barton BTS/1 with a Barton FDP43F body entered service in July 1952 and had a chassis reconstructed from West Riding 506, HL6073, Leyland TD4c for the front end and Burnley 74, HG2708, Leyland TD3c for the rear end. After withdrawal in February 1961 it was scrapped in the following July.

John Stringer's recent picture of Barton's preserved char-a-banc reminded me that it used to be transported to and from rallies on this custom made transporter. The Ian Allan ABC of June 1960 shows this to have been converted from one of Barton's famous BTS/1 rebuilds of pre-war Leylands, this one being from 1952 with a Barton C39F body. Although carrying fleet number 49 here it was originally 668 NNN968 presumably having been renumbered in to the haulage fleet number series.

The chassis of Barton 669, NVO266, a Barton BTS/1 with a Barton FC39F body had been reconstructed from that of Barton 455, HRR 942, a Leyland PD1. 669 entered service in February 1953, was withdrawn in October 1964 and passed to Rostance (builder), Nottingham in February 1965. The adjacent coach 703, OVO 911, was also a Barton BTS/1 with a Barton FDP43F body which shows the rear end design of these bodies.

Barton FDP43F bodywork was fitted to Barton 717, PAL523, a Barton BTS/1 which entered service in November 1953. The chassis had been reconstructed from Barton's 539, JRR919, a 1948 Leyland PS1/1 which had, in June 1953, donated its 1948 Duple body to 199, BAL399, which then took the fleet number 539. After ten years service 717 was withdrawn in November 1963 and passed, in September 1964, to Langley Mill Commercial Vehicles (dealer) Langley Mill.

Seen at Whipsnade Zoo is Barton 772, NOR511, which was an A.E.C. MU3RV Reliance with a Duple Elizabethan body which had been acquired in 1957 from Creamline, Bordon to whom it was new in 1955. It had a special roof luggage rack. It was rebuilt to become the first of the ten Barton BTS2 models in 1969. Fitted with a Plaxton Panorama Elite C45F body it became number 1130 and was re-registered to YRR508H.

MU3RV Reliance with a Weymann Fanfare C41F body and was withdrawn in 1969. The body was scrapped in November 1969 and the chassis rebuilt as Barton BTS2/1074 which was fitted with a Plaxton C45F body, numbered 1137 and registered YRR515H in February 1970.

Both were withdrawn in April 1974 passing to Ensign (dealer), Hornchurch. 788 was exported to Jones (dealer), Jacksonville, Florida. United States in October 1975 whilst 791 found further service with Golden Boy Coaches, Roydon from December 1974 until October 1975 when it was scrapped.

Barton 794, 794ARR, was rebuilt in 1959 from NVX170, a Leyland PS2/11 which had been new to City Coach Company in 1949 with a Heaver B39C body as fleet number G7. The second steering axle had been removed in February 1951 when 30 feet long vehicles on two axles became legal. It passed to Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend in February 1952, was renumbered 132 in July 1954 and passed to Eastern National in January 1955.
