JRR404 entered service as Barton no. 473 on 1 June 1948 and worked from at least the company's Nottingham and Melton Mowbray depots.
The quality of Barton maintenance and overhauls meant long lives for their vehicles and 473 was not withdrawn until July 1973. JRR 404 then became a mobile studio for the photographer Daniel Meadows, as part of his Free Omnibus Photographic Project in the 1970s. JRR404 was later acquired by the Tameside Railway Club at Glossop and then passed to the Wythall Transport Museum in April 1982.
It is currently at Roger Burdett's site for a number of repairs
