Leaving Farnham Road Bus Station in Guildford in the summer of 1967 is Dennis Loline I No.339, SOU 447 with East Lancs H37/31RD bodywork.
No bus station would ever claim to rival a stately pile for aesthetic ambience, but Farnham Road really was a pleasantly acceptable location right beside the River Wey with separate pedestrian access to Guildford’s other, more utilitarian, bus station in Onslow Street. This area now is an utterly dispiriting car park adjacent to the concrete aberration of a circulatory system that blights the Wey crossing at this point, an excrescence dating from the time when the car was king.
These early Lolines were very fine buses indeed, and a ride on one over the Hampshire uplands and round the Devil’s Punchbowl to Petersfield on route 24 was a really enjoyable and speedy experience. A properly geared 6LW could always hold its own against Leyland and AEC pretenders. No. 339 was delivered in March 1958 and withdrawn in 1971.
