Originally London Transport GS40, MXX340 had become West Bromwich 252 in 1963 when acquired from the Corporation Welfare Department where it had been number 49.
The Guy Special with an Eastern Coachworks B26F body was new in December 1953 and had been acquired by the Welfare Department in 1961.
