United rebuilt this 1949 Bristol L5G to front entrance in 1957, losing four seats in the rebuild, to use as a one man bus. BG413, LHN860, is seen at the Beamish Festival of Transport picking up passengers at the museum entrance. The destination is a relic of its time in the TV series Heartbeat. The vehicle behind is a replica AEC B type.

United Auto BH58, SHN714, built 1953 as KSW5G was re-engined with a Bristol 6 cylinder version around 1960. It is passing Cargo Fleet garage 6 months after the formation of Teesside Municipal Transport. The trolleybuses had about 4 years left before withdrawal.

Those of the batch that made the last hurdle to trainer bus (others fell by the wayside on the way) replaced more recently built United LD6Bs.

Bedlington & District 996CHN was new to United in May 1957 as BGS8 before general renumbering to GS8 in November 1964. It was a Bristol LL5G with ECW FB39C to the Queen Mary design but with bus seats. The chassis was extended and rebuilt from GHN991 an L5G with fleet number BLO191 later BG205, the body was 8ft wide hence broader than the chassis.

United Auto's W9, 5466UP, was a Leyland PSU3/1R with Plaxton Highway B55F bodywork, which United had acquired when they bought the old-established firm of Wilkinson's of Sedgefield in February 1967. When new in May 1963 it was Wilkinson's first bus built to the 'new' maximum length of 36' and was numbered 66 in their fleet. In the United re-numbering exercise of January 1969 it received the number 4001.

The conductor has obviously realised there is such a thing as a rear number screen, and has correctly displayed it for the service to Eaglesham. Comparing the reds, there doesn't seem to be much difference in this slide anyway between Western and United.

United Auto 644, OCS584H, was a Bristol VRTSL6G with ECW O43/32F bodywork. It had originally been 2254 in the Western SMT fleet but had been exchanged in 1973 for a Bristol FLF and, after running initially with a normal body, was converted to open-top for the Scarborough seafront service 109 between the Corner Cafe and the Spa.

Northumbria MS 82, WHA237H, was a Leyland Leopard PSU3A/4R based tow wagon built in 1970 with Plaxton bodywork. Formerly 1071 with United AS, this was acquired with the dismemberment of that company but had been new to Midland Red as 6237 with C49F bodywork.
