Southampton relied on open top trams for many years as they had to negotiate the mediaeval Bargate which was to small to allow the use of covered cars. In the thirties, the Southampton manager solved the problem and a batch of covered cars of modern appearance entered service. Car 45 harks back to the earlier arrangements and dates from 1903.

Southampton tram 18 was built in 1924 with Peckham trucks and a Corporation body with their distinctive domed-roof to pass beneath the famous Bargate Arch. This tram was one of no fewer than 37 bought by Leeds in 1949 but, because of their poor condition, only 11 entered service. Sadly, tram 18, although allocated Leeds fleet number 305, never entered service and was eventually burned in 1951.
