On 28th May 1957 Southdown acquired the share capital (but none of the vehicles) of Triumph Coaches Ltd, Portsmouth. The attraction of Triumph was a network of Forces leave services from Portsmouth and Fareham to destinations all over England, together with a large group of excursion and tours licences from Southsea sea front. A possible extra attraction was that Triumph had been part of Basil Wiliams empire from 1947 until the Hants & Sussex group collapsed at the end of 1954. Keeping Triumph as a separate company would help avoid any potential objections from Basil Williams if Southdown were to apply for the licences to be transferred.
