Samuel Ledgard Operator Index

A sad sequel to Paul Haywood's splendid picture of JFJ55 at Arthington in happier times.
Here, we see JFJ52 and JFJ55 resting on the forecourt of Ilkley depot prior to that awful final journey to the breaker. The blackboard gives details of forthcoming excursions - in coaches of the highest standard of course - tickets for which could be bought in the little depot cabin. In retrospect perhaps the withdrawn double deckers could have been spared the indignity of advertising the luxury and adventurous facilities of their successors !!
These two superb vehicles, Daimler CVD6s with finely appointed Brush bodies and classy chrome quarter bumpers on the offside rear corners had served the Ledgard passengers well.

When new in Exeter they will not have undertaken extremely busy long distance interurban services like they were to encounter in Airedale and Wharfedale here in the North.

Photo taken by the late Robert F. Mack (Chris Youhill collection), Aug/Sept 1963, in effect an outpost of the larger Otley premises, the yard of Samuel Ledgard's Ilkley Depot
