Leicester Corporation Tramways 3 was an Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works 22/34 seat open top car with a Brill 21E 4-wheel truck, dating from 1904. As the card caption states, this was the official opening ceremony on the 18th May 1904.
The eleven cars depicted on this postcard (mailed in July 1904) represent just some of the 99 cars bought in 1904, soon to be increased to 121 just one year later. All these open top cars received balcony top covers between 1912 and 1927, and most were rebuilt with fully enclosed bodies by 1934.
Note the date 1874 on the front of the car, reminding onlookers of the Leicester Tramways Company which operated horse cars from that date until municipalisation in 1901 and electrification in 1904. Apart from a few pre-war abandonments, all Leicester's trunk routes survived until 1947-49.
