After the Beeston tram route closed on 19th November 1955, a bus service was introduced between Corn Exchange and Beeston. This was replaced in March 1956 by Route 1 from Beeston to Lawnswood after the closure of the Lawnswood tram service on 3rd March 1956. Seen at the Beeston terminus, in Town Street, on the last day of route 5 from Beeston is Leeds 539, VUG539, a Daimler CVG6 with a Metro-Cammell H33/28R body new in January 1956.
