Despite the impression to the contrary, given by the conductor, it can be confirmed that Leeds Horsfield 171 was photographed at the Temple Newsam terminus in Leeds and is not a scene captured in a City north of the border !
The driver in the shot was known as "Fresh Air Evans" since, apparently, he had the habit of opening all the windows when boarding the tram, whatever the weather conditions. The conductor, Eric Smith, was an enthusiast and one of a number of students who chose to pass their summers as conductors.
