LMN73 was a Leyland PD3A/1 with Weymann H39/30F body new to Bournemouth Corporation in 1963 as 162 (6162RU), sold to IOM Road Services in 1974. It is seen here loading at Port Erin on the Douglas service – unfortunately the three other friends I was with got on and I didn’t!
Pleading with the depot inspector to put on a duplicate fell on deaf ears (although there was a bus spare, he said there was no driver) and I had to catch the next bus an hour later. The others were heading for St Germain’s (hunting down the old railway station) and the connecting bus was due to depart something like 28 minutes before I was due in. Mobile phones of course hadn’t even been dreamt of, but I was astonished to find the bus still waiting when we arrived in Douglas. There followed the most spirited Leyland National ride I can ever recall, regaining most of the 28 minutes by the time we got off! Oh and good old 6162RU was apparently for sale on ebay in November 2012.
