4. EFJ666
Prior to the second world war the Sheffield based firm of Cravens built buses for a wide range of customers. One such was Exeter Corporation who bought this Leyland Tiger TS8 in 1938. Part of a batch of five numbered 65-70, 66 EFJ666 was withdrawn from service in Exeter in 1957 and is now preserved.

Exeter Corporation 15, HFJ142, a 1947 Leyland Titan PD2/1 with bodywork by Leyland. When Exeter were sold to Devon General in 1970 this bus became 245 in the Devon General fleet. Subsequently preserved the bus is seen in a wet Harrogate in 1972 taking part in the Trans-Pennine Rally of that year.

Samuel Ledgard JFJ55 was one of a small batch of former Exeter Daimler CVD6s with Brush bodywork. They had a distinctly utilitarian appearance but dated from 1948.

JFJ873, a Daimler CVD6 with Weymann B35F body, new to Exeter Corporation in 1949 as fleet number 73, becoming 173 after a livery change. Withdrawn in 1966, bought and restored by John Handford in 1995.

The two preserved Exeter Daimler CVD6s with Weymann B35F bodies were together at the G & W Railway running day. There was a formal photo shoot in the morning and this more relaxed one in the afternoon where passengers were allowed to also take their pictures. JFJ873 was one of the first 3 built in 1949 whereas JFJ875 was built as part of the second batch of three in 1950.

Guy Arab UFJ292 seems well loaded as it negotiates a roundabout. New to Exeter Corporation in 1957, it had a Massey 56 seat body. On withdrawal it was bought by Shaw Brothers of Byers Green in whose livery it is preserved.

After the Exeter Corporation fleet was taken over by Devon General, Exeter 56, UFJ296, a Park Royal bodied Guy Arab IV built in 1957, was used as a learner bus and kept the Corporation livery. A green bus amidst Devon General red at Torquay Garage.

Exeter Corporation bought this Leyland Titan PD2/40 with Weymann body in 1958 and numbered it 60, VFJ995, in their fleet. In 1970 this bus was renumbered 260 in the Devon General fleet when they took over Exeter.

In this animated scene at what I assume is Exeter bus station, Exeter 82, 482EFJ, a Leyland Titan PD2A/30 with Massey H31/26R body, leaves for Broadclyst to the north-east of the City. It’s being followed by a van belonging to the Devon General Parcels Service, pulling round the back of one of that fleet’s AEC Reliances. On the left, a Grey Cars Willowbrook Viscount-bodied AEC Reliance is trying to drum up business.

Exeter Corporation were acquired by Devon General in 1970. The fleet was a mixture of Guy and Leyland chassis with bodywork by Massey and Weymann. Seen after withdrawal by Devon General is Exeter 83, 483EFJ, a 1962 Leyland Titan PD2A/30 with Massey bodywork.
