Horsham Carfax is seen here on a blustery Saturday in July 1961, during a period when this town was a Mecca for bus enthusiasts.
In addition to the major operators, Aldershot & District, London Transport and Southdown, one could encounter the bonneted Leyland Comet of A.T. Brady of Forest Green (T/A Brown Motor services) or the Maudslay Marathon III, Leyland PS1 and full fronted Leyland Comet of Mitchell’s of Warnham - Mrs Mitchell continued to drive her buses until well into her seventies. Turn back the clock seven years and one would then have seen the buses of F. H. Kilner Transport, one of the myriad of companies that made up the Hants & Sussex conglomerate of Basil Williams. The Kilner company collapsed into administration on 21 December 1954, and its services were picked up by other operators. One of those services was the Bedford OB / Duple B30F operated 31 between Horsham and the village of Plaistow which passed through sundry other small settlements en route. This service was gleefully taken over by Aldershot & District who had fought numerous Traffic Commissioner battles with Basil over routes in the area.
Here Dennis Lancet J10 No.182, Strachan B38R, HOU908 delivered in December 1950 is leaving Horsham for Plaistow. There were twelve Lancets in this batch, the very last examples of the once many Lancets in the fleet. 182 was withdrawn in 1965 along with two others, the remainder going in 1967.
