Seen in the summer(!) of 1961 in Guildford Park Road, Guildford, just approaching the pedestrian access to Guildford railway station, is Aldershot & District Dennis Lance K3, GOU824, delivered in October 1949 with L25/26R bodywork variously described as being by the Yorkshire Equipment Company of Bridlington, an East Lancs offshoot, or by East Lancs itself.
Originally numbered D729, a number erroneously allocated also to Dennis Lancet GOU 823, it was renumbered 124 in the new series of fleet numbers introduced from October 1950, Lancet GOU 823 then becoming 123. GOU 824 was withdrawn in 1962, being ousted by the influx of new Loline IIIs in the early 'sixties.
Under Aldershot & District's idiosyncratic vehicle allocation system, this bus spent almost its entire life with the company on the short local route 27 plodding between Farnham Road Bus Station and Dennisville, the estate built by Dennis in the mid 1930s to house the workers who had transferred from the former White and Poppe engine factory in Coventry.
The Lance K3 buses, with their smooth running O6 engines and five speed overdrive gearboxes, were popular with drivers, rather more so than the later, less lively K4 type with Gardner 5LW power units. Of note is the high driving position, seemingly shared with the Lancet cab layout. Dennis designed a neat, new lower bonnet and radiator for the K type Lance, yet curiously persevered with the somewhat antiquated high bonnet and radiator for the contemporary Lancet.
