Former London Transport RM1666 originally registered 666DYE, but now KGJ341A in the 'Midnight black' livery of its current owner Ghost Bus Tours and wearing London Necrobus fleetnames awaits passengers in Edinburgh for what its operator describes as a "comedy horror theatre experience".
Ian Smith's site reports that RM1666 was new in 7/63 and it entered service in 8/63 at Peckham and was privatised to London Central in 10/94. It then worked from New Cross and was route branded for Route 36 (New Cross to Queen's Park via Camberwell, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch and Paddington) and was refurbished in 1995 and 2000 and was used on the last official day of crew-operation in the capital on 28/1/05. It passed to Ensignbus in 2/05 and into preservation with a married couple in Ulverston in 6/05, before Ghost Bus Tours bought it in 12/11.
It was then repainted to 'Midnight black' with silver central band and fitted out with plush red velvet curtains, antique lampshades, audio-visual equipment and upper-deck tables and re-registered as KGJ341A, as its original plate was considered to be 'too over the top' for its new duties. The Necrobus concept is fictitious (thankfully) and tourists are told of a disastrous fire at its South Dulstead premises, which this bus managed to survive and that it has been reactivated after being in storage for 40 years. A guide then entertains passengers with comedy/horror as they tour the city visiting the attractions. Tours are also operated from London and York and at present the Edinburgh ones cost £17/adult, £12/child, £47/family and £14/senior or student and there was a discount for parties of over 20, but maybe that doesn't apply now.
The concept seems to be successful and should you wish to find out more and book your tickets the website address is www.theghostbustours.com , but on the other hand, you may prefer to do something else!
