232. SUF899 ... On 28th May 1957 Southdown acquired the share capital (but none of the vehicles) of Triumph Coaches Ltd, Portsmouth. The attraction of Triumph was a network of Forces leave services from Portsmouth and Fareham to destinations all over England, together with a large group of excursion and tours licences from Southsea sea front. A possible extra attraction was that Triumph had been part of Basil Wiliams empire from 1947 until the Hants & Sussex group collapsed at the end of 1954. Keeping Triumph as a separate company would help avoid any potential objections from Basil Williams if Southdown were to apply for the licences to be transferred. Those of you with a copy of the history of King Alfred that he co-authored with James Freeman will be familiar with some of these. Whilst looking at some negatives on the lightbox, I first passed over this one as another shot of one of the KA Tiger Cubs WCG103-105. It's certainly very similar, but this is 650AAA, the vehicle bought new in 1960 for Basil Williams' Southern Motorways fleet at Emsworth, I think for the Thorney Island service. The last vehicles ordered and purchased by Jones before they came under the control of the NBC were a pair of Leyland Tiger Cub PSUC1/12T with Willowbrook B47F bodies numbered 24-25 (RWO 556-557G). 24, RWO556G, was renumbered U2069 in September 1974 and was almost the last bus remaining in pre-NBC livery when it was painted blue and white in June 1975. 572. UDT455F ... Doncaster Corporation 55, UDT455F, is a 1969 Leyland Royal Tiger Cub with Roe bodywork. The Royal Tiger Cub was an export chassis and only Doncaster bought any in the UK; the 1969 deliveries would be the last bought by Doncaster.
