Gosport & Fareham (Provincial), Hoeford 77, EWO467, was a Guy Arab I which had been new as Red & White, Chepstow 467 in October 1942, with a Duple L27/28R body.

This 1942 austerity Guy Arab I was supplied to the Red and White group in 1942 with a Duple lowbridge body as their 467, EWO467. In 1950 it was rebodied with this BBW lowbridge body and numbered L442 in the Red & White fleet a further re-numbering saw it become LL442 After withdrawal by Red and White it was eventually bought by Provincal of Gosport in whose fleet it became 77.

West Riding 570, HL9955, was a Guy Arab I with Roe L24/26R (reseated in 1950 from L27/28R) body new in 1942 and is parked outside Selby Garage.

Seen ascending the incongruously named Flat Street in Sheffield is HWA679, a Guy Arab I with a Weymann H30/26R body new in 1942 which was one of five supplied with bodies intended for Manchester COG5s, the chassis for which were destroyed when the Daimler factory was bombed. It had been fleet number 479 before being transferred to the tuition fleet.

Dundas Street Bus Station, Glasgow is the setting for Guy Arab I WG9818, RO438, which was new to Alexander, Falkirk in 1942 with a Duple L27/28R body. It was transferred to Lawson, Kirkintilloch in 1949 and was rebodied in June 1951 with a new Eastern Coachworks L27/26R body.

The last of three Guy Arab IIs received by West Riding, Wakefield in 1943 was 579, AHL8, which had a Roe L27/28R body, later altered to L27/26R, and seen in Leeds Central Bus Station.

ASD254, a Guy Arab II with a Massey L27/26R body became Paton, Renfrew 46 in 1958 when it was acquired from Northern Roadways. New to Western S.M.T in 1943, it was numbered 192 in 1949 when the fleet was numbered. Withdrawn in 1956 it passed to Millburn Motors (dealer), Glasgow and to Northern Roadways in April 1958 then to Paton later in 1958 and is seen at the garage.

Acquired from Western S.M.T. in 1957, Highland E5, ASD406, was a Guy Arab II with Northern Counties L27/26R body new in November 1943. It is seen here in Farraline Park Bus Station, Inverness and was fitted with platform doors in 1960 and withdrawn in 1963.

North Western 14, BJA133, was a Guy Arab II fitted with a Strachan L27/28R body when new in 1943. It was rebodied in 1950 with the Willowbrook L27/26R body it is seen with here at Manchester (L.M.S.).

This utility Guy Arab II of 1943 has a most interesting history. It was one of over 100 Arab utilities delivered to Plymouth City Transport during the war years, CDR679 with fleet number 249. The whole batch featured lowbridge bodies built by Roe. After withdrawal in 1957 it was sold to Grenville Motors of Camborne. Eventually it was sold to an Essex farm who removed the body and converted it into a flat truck to move bales of hay.

CDR679, a Guy Arab II (5LW) originally new in 1943 to Plymouth C.T. (249) with a Roe L27/28R body.

DCR866, Hants & Dorset 1102 had been rebuilt by Portsmouth Aviation in February 1950 when the rubber mounted windows with sliding vents were fitted, the front opening vents from each saloon removed and the seating altered to L27/26R.

20. DDW34
DDW34 was a Guy Arab I with a Weymann H30/26R body new in 1943 as Newport 98. It was acquired by Morgan, Armthorpe in October 1953. The body was originally intended for a Manchester Daimler COG5 the chassis of which was destroyed when the Daimler factory was bombed. It is seen at the Christ Church terminus in Doncaster.

21. DGG910
DGG910 had the Guy Arab II chassis from Glasgow 64 which had been new in November 1943 with a Pickering H30/26R body. Withdrawn by Glasgow in 1951 it passed to Dodds, Troon and was rebodied by Roe with a B38C body after the chassis had been lengthened, entering service with Dodds as DT5 in May 1953, and passing to a contractor after withdrawal in October 1965.

Swindon 51, DHR192, has surprisingly not hitherto featured on the site. Retained as part of the British Transport Collection it is an excellent example of the standard utility Guy, being an Arab II (5LW) with a Weymann body. It is climbing up to Chesterfield's depot at Stonegravels Road on 4th July 1982 to attend the Chesterfield Centenary Rally.

EHO587, a Guy Arab I with Strachan L22/26R body was delivered new to Aldershot & District in 1943 and given the fleet number G6. It was rebodied by Weymann L25/26R in 1950 and renumbered as 872 the following year, lasting in this form until 1964 when it was withdrawn and sold the next year to British Railways.

Mid Wales Motorways, Newtown FFM274, a Guy Arab II 5LW/ NCME UL27/26R new 5/43 as Crosville M155 (renumbered MG155 in 1946). It was one of two (the other one was FFM273) acquired via Guy Motors, Wolverhampton by who was reconditioned in 1957.

Guy Arab II FTD450 was new in 1943 with a Massey H30/26R body as Rawtenstall Corporation 37. It was rebodied in 1951 with an East Lancs H30/26R body and was acquired by Clark, Dumfries from Rawtenstall Corporation via Tiger (dealer), Salsburgh to whom it had been sold in August 1964. It passed from Clark to Western S.M.T. in August 1965 along with Leyland Royal Tiger FJA612 and then to Milburn Motors (dealer), Glasgow in September 1965.

A close up of the badge on Rawtenstall’s only Guy, 37, FTD450. The water flow through the radiator cap has clearly been a two-way process, which is a little surprising given that Gardner engines traditionally run cool. The tax disc tells us it must have been taken in 1961.

Ex-Midland Red 2501, GHA925, was a Guy Arab new in 1943 with a Weymann H30/26R body. It was withdrawn in 1956 and passed to Warner, Tewkesbury along with two others. This one was not operated by Warner.

In December 1951 Western S.M.T. acquired twenty-two Guy Arab IIs from London Transport Executive and 999, GLL590, seen here, had a Park Royal H30/26R body when new in 1943. It was rebodied with an Alexander L27/26R body in 1952 when it received its fleet number. All had run un-numbered until rebodied.

HL9994, seen in Selby Market Place, was West Riding, Wakefield 576, and was a Guy Arab I (6LW) which had been new in 1943 with a Brush L27/28R body. In August 1950 this was replaced with the 1937 Roe L24/24R body from 504, HL6071, with the Brush body being fitted to 504, a Leyland TD4c for disposal to Morrell (dealer), Leeds.

Acquired from Potteries Motor Traction L248 by January 1961, JEH482 was number DT17 in the Dodds, Troon fleet and was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties L27/26RD body new in 1952 which had replaced its Strachans L27/28R body fitted when it was new in 1943.

Seen in Calverley is Ledgard, Armley JUA762, a Guy Arab I with a Roe H31/25R body. When new in 1943 it had a Pickering H30/26R body, the replacement Roe body being fitted in October 1951.

Highland AMS43 (E21) and WG9821 (E12) were Guy Arabs with Roe L27/26R and Strachan L27/26R bodies respectively. E12 (Arab I) was new to Alexander in January 1943, passing to Lawson, Kirkintilloch in September 1943, whilst E21 (Arab II) was new to Lawson in March 1944.

WG9981 was a Guy Arab with an Eastern Coachworks L27/26R body and was number RO452 in the fleet of Lawson, Kirkintilloch which was seen in Dundas Street bus station in Glasgow. When new in 1943 it had a Roe L27/28R body and was rebodied in July 1951.

On a wet day at Dunfermline, Alexander Fife FRO477, AMS149, a Northern Counties H30/26R bodied Guy Arab II leaves for Lochgelly. It had been new in July 1944 as Alexander RO477 and was not withdrawn until June 1968.

New to Alexander, Falkirk in May 1944 it had originally carried a Roe L27/26R body and had been transferred to Lawson in 1945 and is seen at Dundas Street Bus Station, Glasgow.

Birkenhead were allocated this Guy Arab II with austerity Massey body in 1944 Originally 324, BG8557, in Birkenhead's fleet it was rebodied in 1953 and renumbered as 242 with Massey again providing the H31/28R body. In its new guise it remained in service until 1969, a very creditable 24 years.

When new as Birch Brothers K103 in 1945 it had a Weymann L27/28R body and passed to Moore in June 1951. In 1963 it became Eastern National 1029 on the acquisition of Moore Brothers.

The WETC at Winkleigh could always be counted on to provide some interesting surprises on a visit. One such surprise was this Devon General utility Guy Arab which had been rebodied by Roe. Numbered DG314, JTA314, in the fleet it has survived the intervening years and has recently moved up North to Halifax, but is still apparently in a very similar condition. It's a testimony to the Roe body that despite all those years it still looks solid and straight.

Dodds, Troon acquired Guy Arab III DVD310 which had been new in 1948 with an Irvine L27/28R body, from Irvine, Salsburgh. The body was scrapped, the chassis lengthened, and it was rebodied by Roe with a B38C body before it entered service in May 1953 as DT1.

This Edinburgh Guy Arab III saloon 739, ESG652, has a Metro-Cammell body and already appears on SCT61, but this picture shows it has been restored a long time, taking part in the 1976 Trans-Pennine Run. I always looked forward to the Scottish entries as they were both well-restored and interesting and I admired the owners for bringing them such a long way at not inconsiderable cost.

This was about the time it was withdrawn by Burton and as far as I can find out it was bought with a view to preservation but only the chassis had survived by 2001 when that was scrapped.

The last new vehicle of Highland Transport was 92, EST395, a Guy Arab III with a Strachan B38F body new in May 1951. It passed as K92, with the rest of the fleet, to Highland Omnibuses on formation in February 1952 and was withdrawn in 1969. It is seen here in Fraserburgh, still carrying its Highland fleet number plate, with Hall & Robertson (contractor), Fraserburgh who had acquired it by June 1969.

Henry Christopher Chambers set up a saddlery business in Bures, a village that straddles across the Suffolk/Essex border, in 1877, and began began operating a horse drawn bus service a few years later. Up to the time when it was taken over by Go Ahead in 2012, H C Chambers & Son of Bures laid claim to being the oldest bus operating company in England.

This is MOF90, a Guy Arab IV with Metro Cammell H30/25R body and originally was Birmingham 3090. It has a Gardner engine and hasn't been seen for a long time. Recently changed hands, it has only recently been towed to Roger Burdett's place for internal and external restoration. It is not part of Roger's collection but is making use of free workshop space currently available.

A message has highlighted the fact, not readily observed, that the lower saloon windows were deeper on the nearside than the offside due to the sunken side gangway. From this angle it is possible to see how this discontinuity was incorporated into the lines of the body. The central cream band can be seen to be noticeably narrower on the nearside than on the rear (and round to the offside), the step in height being lost around the rear door opening.

Six of West Riding's 1957 Roe bodied Guy Arabs with 431, originally, 828, KHL828 in the centre (and a lone Panther). They had very well appointed interiors and, partly due to the early demise of the Wulfrunians, had long active lives - they were still in regular all-day service around Castleford and Featherstone in the early 'seventies.

Stuart Little's recent Edinburgh bus rally photograph prompted me to post this view, taken on the Huddersfield Centenary Rally in 1983, to commemorate one hundred years of municipal public transport. I believe nineteen buses are visible here and they are listed below as far as I can identify. The late Bob Mack will have taken a very similar photograph to this as he was stood on the platform of the bus next to me, only I've forgotten what it was.

Although effectively separate companies with their own depots, Blue Line (Samuel Morgan Ltd) and 1949 subsidiary Reliance (R. Store Ltd) shared the same two-tone blue livery and routes.

Wolverhampton was to Guy what Coventry was to Daimler; a consistently loyal buyer of the locally built buses. When the recently permitted 2 axle 30ft long double-deckers began arriving in 1958, Wolverhampton initially opted for fully-fronted, forward entrance bodies mounted on Guy's Arab IV 6LW model. The first, with, a Burlingham FH41/27F body was followed by 50 with Metro-Cammell Orion FH41/31F bodies between December 1959 and December 1961.

It is passing Yorkshire Woollen District 511, GKP443, a Guy Arab II (6LW) new in 1944 to Maidstone & District (DH62) with a Weymann H30/26R utility body, but exchanged with YWD for a Daimler CWA6, then rebodied for YWD by Roe as H31/25R in 1955.

The bus was new to Blue Line in April 1966 and passed with the business to SYPTE in March 1979 although it had been withdrawn by then.

It was new in August 1967 and, although bought by SYPTE with the business in March 1979, it was, by then, out of service. In fact, out of the six Guy Arab Vs purchased by Blue Line and Reliance between 1963 and 1969, only 891GWT, the first of these, was still serviceable at the time of the takeover.
