Following recent comments about why Guy Wulfrunians had front grilles when they also had Cave-Brown-Cave heating, here is an image taken during the restoration of West Riding 995, UCX275.
As can be seen the offside front opens to allow access to the engine so a grille helps with direct cooling. The engine is extremely accessible when all the shrouds are removed and could be withdrawn through the front opening. Water pipes run up the central pillar and there is a top up tank on the nearside accessed behind a flap on the platform. Restoration of 995 was undertaken over the winter of 1972-73 in the West Riding depot at Saville Street in the days before the Ravensthorpe garage became the Wulfrunian Society's home. Note the stamped metal number plate attached to the nearside front panel, whereas after restoration a painted number plate was centred across the join. To open the front, the Guy badge carried in preservation has to be removed and then around eight bolts are removed before finally the handle the conductor uses to hold on to when changing the blinds, can be used to swing the front panel open.
