A second interior view of West Riding 480 (898) THL898 this time looking to the rear.
After the four pairs of two seats, can be seen two sideways seats for three followed by two pairs of twin seats giving a lower saloon capacity of 32. The red moquette shows that 898 was originally a red fleet bus. A possible 36 foot chassis may have allowed the squeezing in of two more rows of seats to give a maximum of 40 or if not, removing the single seats to allow 38 passengers may have been necessary. Notice the very narrow gangway between the rear wheels leading to the central rear emergency door. The hatches in the floor allow access to the gearbox which sits very low to the road and it was not unknown for the gearbox oil drain plug to be knocked off by a high road grate. Outward from the centre gangway, the floor rises slightly under the seats.
The ability to get up to 53 seats in a Bristol RE with a two step entrance and ramped floor meant a single deck Wulfrunian was a non starter.
