Photographed on a private hire to the HCVC Rally in Brighton on 3 May 1970 is OFC902H, a Bristol VRT/SL6G with ECW H39/31 body, No.902 in the City of Oxford fleet.
Originally ordered by Southern Vectis, this bus was one of three delivered to COMS in April 1970, so 902 was still very new when seen here. Enthusiasts bewailed the appearance of the simplified Oxford colour scheme, though we were all then blissfully unaware of the forthcoming livery horrors of NBC naffness and the post deregulation psychedelic absurdities of the privateers. In 1971 this bus suffered extreme damage in a serious traffic accident with an articulated lorry, yet, barely believably given the extent of the destruction, it was rebuilt by ECW and has survived into preservation.
The picture location is Old Steine southbound, just before the junction with St. James Street.
