During 1967/8 production delays with traditional Bristol/ECW combinations led to some unusual purchases by the THC companies. Hants and Dorset received a trio of Bedford VAM14 with Strachan B33D+25 bodies numbered 825-827, JLJ51E-JLJ53E. Later renumbered 1501-1503 they had short lives, with 1503 and 1501 stored out of use at Poole garage during 1975.

Eastern Counties received four Bedford VAM with ECW B41F bodywork in 1967. Given the rather apt designation SB661-664, NAH661F-NAH664F the first two were Bedford engined VAM5 with the latter two Leyland engined VAM14. The body was adapted from the MW design with amended windscreens to suit the front mounted engine and radiator.

Making its ownership pretty clear, KUP155J stands at the Burnhope terminus of the service from Stanley, formerly operated by Armstrong's of Ebchester. Apart from a Bedford OB bought in 1960 and a VAL14 bought in 1967, 1974 was the only year in which Bedfords joined the Dearneways fleet. As well as those which came with the Fretwell business, four former Grey-Green five year old Plaxton Panorama Elite C45F bodied VAM70s were acquired (WLT581-4G). WLT581G, seen here entering Sheffield Central Bus Station on the evening of 27 June 1975, with the iconic Park Hill Flats in the background, stayed the longest, being withdrawn in 1979; the rest went in 1978.
