Portsmouth Tower Wagon TW1 TP181 attends to the overhead wiring on the north side of Ports Bridge in August 1950. It had been converted 1/33 from bus 16, a 1924 Dennis 50cwt with a Strachan & Brown body.

John Bennett (Croydon) Ltd OY2569, a 1932 Leyland TS4 originally with Harrington body rebodied in 1949 with this Strachan C33F body. This is an official Strachan photo as you can see by the embossed stamp in the right hand corner.

Burrows 78, BGO161, was acquired from London Transport (STL1246) in March 1953. An AEC Regent, originally with L.P.T.B. H30/26R body new in July 1936, it was rebodied in May 1956 with the 1947 Strachan L27/28R body removed from Burrows 55 (FWX869) when that vehicle was rebodied by Roe.

Dennis Lancet Coach EZ3696 with Strachans B36R body new in 1936 to WJ Clements (The Major), Belfast. Major ran Belfast to Gilnahirk; the service passed to the Corporation in 1945, but the vehicles went to Londonderry & Lough Swilly although this Dennis was not one of them.

DCR866, Hants & Dorset 1102 had been rebuilt by Portsmouth Aviation in February 1950 when the rubber mounted windows with sliding vents were fitted, the front opening vents from each saloon removed and the seating altered to L27/26R.

Great Yarmouth 17, EX5264, was a utility Guy Arab II with Strachan H56R body which entered service in 1945. It was withdrawn from service late in 1960 and was then converted into a travelling library.

Successor to two early prewar AEC Regents as Great Yarmouth's travelling library, 1945 Guy Arab ll Strachan (17, EX5264) was withdrawn from passenger service in 1960 and spent nine years in its new role.

Moore Brothers, Kelvedon GYL983, seen at Braintree was a Guy Arab II with a Strachan L27/28R (8'0" wide) body fitted in 1954. When new as Birch Brothers K103 in 1945 it had a Weymann L27/28R body and passed to Moore in June 1951. In 1963 it became Eastern National 1029 on the acquisition of Moore Brothers.

One of the ten Leyland PS1/1s with Strachans C33F bodies new to United Service Transport, London S.W.17 in 1947, 1054, HYP330, is seen at Ascot races alongside one of their Duple Vega bodied Bedford SBs. After withdrawal HYP330, which was new in August 1947, is recorded as passing to "C.G. (contractor)" in October 1963 along with two others from the batch, also in 1963.

This batch of Western SMT PD1s already appears on SCT61, but not with their original Strachans bodies. Hardly surprising as, although new in 1949 they had been rebodied by 1953 with new ECW bodies, due apparently to the novel all-metal design proving to be far from robust. I believe this one was new as 508, CCS406, later becoming D508, but I don't have much reference material for Western SMT.

Highland K46, DST929, a Guy Arab III single decker with Strachans B34F body, one of seven such vehicles delivered between August 1948 and May 1950 to the Highland Transport Company Limited. It was delivered with fleet number 46, becoming K46 when Highland Omnibuses Ltd. was formed in February 1952.

Three South Yorkshire, Pontefract buses in Leeds Bus Station during the evening peak hour. 71, JWR874, was an Albion CX37 Venturer, new in February 1950, with a Strachans L24/28R body whilst 53, EWT 956, was a Daimler CWA6 with a Brush L27/28R body new in 1944 and was only the second double deck bus to enter the South Yorkshire fleet.

The last new vehicle of Highland Transport was 92, EST395, a Guy Arab III with a Strachan B38F body new in May 1951. It passed as K92, with the rest of the fleet, to Highland Omnibuses on formation in February 1952 and was withdrawn in 1969. It is seen here in Fraserburgh, still carrying its Highland fleet number plate, with Hall & Robertson (contractor), Fraserburgh who had acquired it by June 1969.

MBY910 had been new to Homeland Tours, Croydon in June 1954, one of two Leyland PSUC1/2 Tiger Cubs with Strachans Everest C41C bodies. It passed to Bourne & Balmer, Croydon when the Homeland business was aquired in April 1955 and to Timpson, London S.E.6 in April 1960 when the Bourne & Balmer business was acquired. Timpson withdrew it in October 1964 and it passed to Horlock, Northfleet in June 1965 before reaching McLennan in February 1966. It was seen at McLennan's garage at Spittalfield.

An unidentified Dartford Tunnel cycle bus at one of the loading ramps, one of a fleet of five Ford Thames Traders with Strachans bodies seating 33 upstairs and carrying 23 bikes downstairs. They entered service in November 1963 and ran through the tunnel largely empty until October 1965 when they were replaced by a Land-Rover with trailer, on call for use as required. The five were registered 526FJJ to 530FJJ.

During 1967/8 production delays with traditional Bristol/ECW combinations led to some unusual purchases by the THC companies. Hants and Dorset received a trio of Bedford VAM14 with Strachan B33D+25 bodies numbered 825-827, JLJ51E-JLJ53E. Later renumbered 1501-1503 they had short lives, with 1503 and 1501 stored out of use at Poole garage during 1975.

We are getting into the "bread van" era, and while I never considered them to be "real buses", they were certainly part of the "small is economical" thinking which was about to be inflicted on the travelling public.
