1. VC5867 ... An official Northern Counties, Wigan photograph with no other information. The bus has "Maudsley" on the destination screen, so would it be a Maudsley chassis? Certainly not a Leyland or Daimler, with a thick radiator and an unpainted bonnet area. (Spencer Road, Wigan)

2. XS4104 ... XS4104, a Leyland TD4 with Northern Counties body first owned by Young's which became part of WSMT in 1951. (1954, Pointhouse Garage, Port Bannatyne, Isle of Bute)

3. CTU961 ... Seen in Hyde is S.H.M.D. CTU961, a Thornycroft Cygnet in use as the staff canteen. When new in 1936 its Northern Counties body had been B36R and it carried number 162. It was converted to a mobile canteen for Hyde Market Place after withdrawal in 1956. (Sat 14/3/59, Hyde)

5. DMB738 ... A rear view of DMB738, a Daimler COG5 with a Northern Counties B38R body, which was number 178 in the S.H.M.D. fleet and was new in 1937. It is seen in Calder Street adjacent to Lower Mosley Street Bus Station in Manchester. (Sat 7/2/59, Calder Street, Manchester)

7. DUF154 ... Southdown, Brighton 154, DUF154, seen in Old Steine, Brighton was a 1937 Leyland TD4 with its second body, a Northern Counties H28/26R one. (Sun 11/9/60, Old Steine, Brighton)

8. JK7431 ... Eastbourne Corporation open-topper 10, JK7431, an AEC Regent with Northern Counties 48 seat body new in January 1938, fitted with a diesel engine and rebuilt to open-top in 1956. One of a batch of five, believed to be the last AEC Regent buses delivered with petrol engines. (July 1960, Grand Parade, Eastbourne)

13. GCD353 ... Southdown 253, GCD353, Leyland Titan TD5 of 1939, originally with Park Royal 52 seat body, was rebodied by Northern Counties after the war. It is seen working a Brighton local service. (1961, Old Steine, Brighton)

14. GCD355 ... Southdown 255, GCD355, was a 1939 built Leyland TD5 which by this time had acquired a Northern Counties H54R all-metal body. (Goring Road/Elm Grove, Worthing)

20. FFM274 ... Mid Wales Motorways, Newtown FFM274, a Guy Arab II 5LW/ NCME UL27/26R new 5/43 as Crosville M155 (renumbered MG155 in 1946). It was one of two (the other one was FFM273) acquired via Guy Motors, Wolverhampton by who was reconditioned in 1957. (Sun 11/8/63, Newtown Garage ?)

21. FTD580 ... Lancashire United 287, FTD580, the first of ten Guy Arab IIs with Northern Counties L27/26R bodies new in 1943, was seen at Westinghouse Road, Trafford Park. (Mon 6/6/60, Trafford Park, Manchester)

22. HG8070 ... BCN 66, HG8070, a Guy Arab II with Park Royal UH30/26R bodywork was new on 1943. Seven years later it was re-bodied by NCME to the same capacity. (1964, BCN Queensgate Garage)

23. JEH482 ... Acquired from Potteries Motor Traction L248 by January 1961, JEH482 was number DT17 in the Dodds, Troon fleet and was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties L27/26RD body new in 1952 which had replaced its Strachans L27/28R body fitted when it was new in 1943. 24. AMS149 ... On a wet day at Dunfermline, Alexander Fife FRO477, AMS149, a Northern Counties H30/26R bodied Guy Arab II leaves for Lochgelly. It had been new in July 1944 as Alexander RO477 and was not withdrawn until June 1968. (Tue 27/7/65, Dunfermline Bus Station)

25. AMS162 ... Alexander (Fife) FRO490, AMS162, a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body was new in August 1944 to Alexander, Falkirk, as RO490, passing to Alexander (Fife) in May 1961 and was withdrawn in 1966. (Wed 12/8/64, Kirkcaldy Depot)

26. AMS231 ... New to Alexander, Falkirk, AMS231 was numbered RO516 and was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body new in November 1944. (Wed 12/8/64, Kirkcaldy Depot)

27. AMS234 ... AMS234 was new as Alexander, Falkirk RO519 in November 1944. It was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body and passed to Alexander (Fife) in May 1961 as FRO519, being withdrawn in 1967. (Wed 12/8/64, Kirkcaldy Depot)

28. EDK802 ... Passing Martin’s Bank in Rochdale, on a rainy day, Rochdale 192, EDK802, operates to Broad Lane. It was a Daimler CWA6 with a Northern Counties H30/26R body new in 1944. (Mon 29/4/57, Yorkshire Street, Rochdale)

29. GUF119 ... Southdown 419, GUF119, was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body new in 1944 seen at Old Steine. (Sat 31/1/59, Old Steine, Brighton)

30. GUF123 ... Southdown 423, GUF123, new in November 1944, was a Guy Arab II (6LW) with a Northern Counties H30/26R body. (Sun 15/9/63, Eastbourne Pier/Grand Parade)

31. GUF136 ... Premier Travel, Cambridge 102, GUF136, was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H28/26R body acquired in March 1957 from Southdown, Brighton where it had been number 436, and was new in 1944. (Sun 5/7/59, Harston Depot)

32. HMA527 ... HMA527 seen outside the garage in Tame Street, Stalybridge was a Daimler CWA6 new in 1944 with a Northern Counties H30/26R body and was number 195 in the S.H.M.D. fleet. One of three (194-196), it was withdrawn in 1960 and sold to Max Speed Transportation (dealer), London for scrap. (Sat 28/2/59, Tame Street Garage, Stalybridge)

33. OSD178 ... Northern Counties FH37/27F bodywork dating from 1960 graced this Guy Arab II of Dodds, Troon in his part of the A.A. Motor Services, Ayr fleet. Now registered OSD178, and seen in the A.A. bus station in Ayr, it had previously been Plymouth 277 (CDR 757) carrying a Roe L27/28R body when new in 1944. In 1954 it was acquired by Dodds from North (dealer), Leeds and stored until rebuilt and rebodied. (Wed 6/6/62, A.A. Bus Station, Boswell Park, Ayr)

37. GUF130 ... The fifth of the six buses acquired from Southdown in 1957 became Premier Travel, Cambridge 106, GUF130, with a Northern Counties H28/26R body. (Sun 5/7/59, Chrishall Depot)

38. GUF131 ... In 1957 Premier Travel, Cambridge acquired six Guy Arab IIs from Southdown, five with Northern Counties bodies and one with a Weymann body. 104, GUF131, had a Northern Counties H28/26R body and was withdrawn in February 1962 and sold to Cowley (dealer), Salford. 40. GUF191 ... Providing transport to and from lunch for the judges at the British Coach Rally was Southdown, Brighton 451, GUF191, a Guy Arab II (5LW) new in 1945 with a Northern Counties H30/26R body. (Sun 19/4/59, Madeira Drive, Brighton)

41. GYE83 ... Alexander, Falkirk RO697, GYE83, was a Guy Arab II (5LW) with a Northern Coachbuilders H30/26R body (sub-contracted to them by Park Royal), which had been new in June 1945 to the London Passenger Transport Board as G139. (Fri 24/7/59, Kinnoull Street, Perth)

42. GYL433 ... Alexander, Falkirk RO717, GYL433. was a Guy Arab II (5LW) with a Northern Counties H30/26R body which had been new in December 1945 to the London Passenger Transport Board as G293. (Fri 24/7/59, Garage Yard, Riggs Road, Perth)

45. HE9977 ... HE9977 was a Guy Arab II (6LW) with a Northern Counties H30/26R body, new as Yorkshire Traction 723 in April 1945. It is seen here in Manchester at the L.M.S. 47. BAG129 ... Scrapyard/dealer line-up with in the centre Ribble Motors Leyland Titan Highbridge Double Deck, I think 2657, CCK829, built 1948. Oh how I wish I had taken more pictures at this place; there must have been at least fifty buses. The single decker my partner in crime is leaning on is HD5802 and the white double decker is BAG129. The more interesting one looks like the single decker with the white roof, no doubt the connoisseurs out there will know were its from etc. (1962, Millburn Motors, Walmer Bridge)

48. BST570 ... New to Highland Transport as number 47 in December 1946, BST570 was a Northern Counties L27/26R bodied Guy Arab II which became E47 after passing to Highland Omnibuses in February 1952. (Sat 25/7/59, Farraline Park Bus Station, Inverness)

49. BST572 ... Highland E52, BST572, was new in 1946 as Highland Transport 52, passing to Highland Omnibuses on formation in February 1952. The Guy Arab II carried a Northern Counties L27/26R body and it is seen here in Inverness. (Fri 30/7/65, Academy Street, Inverness)

50. BST573 ... New to Highland Transport as number 50 in December 1946, BST573 was a Northern Counties L27/26R bodied Guy Arab II which became E50 after passing to Highland Omnibuses in February 1952. (Sat 25/7/59, Farraline Park Bus Station, Inverness)

51. BVD911 ... Central S.M.T. L222, BVD911, a Leyland PD1, new in 1946, with a Northern Counties L27/26R body.is seen in Edinburgh Bus Station. (Thu 23/7/59, Edinburgh Bus Station)

52. CKG193 ... Cardiff 203, CKG193, seen at Sandtoft during the years before its final glorious restoration. It was an AEC664T with Northern Counties H38/32R bodywork which was new on 1 March 1942 and withdrawn in December 1962. It is wearing the wartime grey primer in which this batch of trolleybuses were delivered. In 1946 is was repainted into the crimson lake livery which it currently carries, but by 1950 it had been repainted again, this time into standard motorbus colours. 53. GYL448 ... Alexander, Falkirk RO719, GYL448, was a Guy Arab II (5LW) with a Northern Counties H30/26R body which had been new in March 1946 to the London Passenger Transport Board as G308. (Fri 24/7/59, Garage, Riggs Road, Perth)

54. XS5709 ... Western S.M.T. 2150, XS5709, was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body which had been new to Young, Paisley in 1946. (Tue 5/6/62, Whitesands, Dumfries)

55. XS5714 ... Western S.M.T. 2155, XS5714, seen in Dumfries was a Guy Arab II with a Northern Counties H30/26R body which had been new in 1946 to Young, Paisley 155. Western acquired it in January 1951 with the Young business and withdrew it later in 1962. (Tue 5/6/62, Whitesands, Dumfries)

56. BVD927 ... Northern Counties L27/26R bodied Leyland PD1, BVD927, had been new as Central S.M.T. L238 in 1947 but was, when photographed, HH12 in the Scottish Omnibuses fleet having been acquired in 1961. It was sold in December 1965. (Tue 27/7/65, Bathgate)

57. BWH833 ... Bolton 332, BWH833, delivered in 1947 was a Leyland PD1/2 with Northern Counties H30/26R body and was one of a batch of fifteen, a further fifteen having Manchester style Crossley bodies. The PD1/2 was the air braked version and was unique to Bolton. (Tue 22/3/60, Moor Lane Bus Station, Bolton)

58. CST271 ... CST271 had been new to Highland Transport in December 1947. This Guy Arab II with Northern Counties L27/26R body passed to Highland Omnibuses in February 1952 when it became E65. (Sat 25/7/59, Farraline Park Bus Station, Inverness)

59. EN8823 ... The second batch of Leyland PD1 deliveries to Bury had Northern Counties H30/26R bodies as typified by 129, EN8823, the last in a batch of thirteen delivered in 1947 which is seen in Bury. (Sun 1/6/58, Bury)

60. GMN905 ... Douglas Corporation 54, GMN905, was one of two A.E.C. 0961 Regent IIIs, of London Transport style, delivered in 1947. (Sun 27/6/65, Douglas, I.O.M.)

61. JMB852 ... S.H.M.D. 23, JMB852, was an 8' 0" wide Daimler CVD6 new in 1947 with a Northern Counties H30/26R body and is seen in Chorlton Street Bus Station in the dark green livery with the silver roof. (Sat 4/6/60, Chorlton Street Bus Station, Manchester)

69. 904LRR ... On the left is Barton Transport 904, 904LRR, whose chassis was reconstructed from that of HD7836. This had been a Leyland Titan PD2/1 with Brush H30/26R body new to Yorkshire Woollen District (553) in 1948, withdrawn in 1960, and passing to Barton with three others via the dealer Frank Cowley. 70. BSD433 ... New in 1948 and seen in Ayr, Western S.M.T. 470, BSD433, was an A.E.C. 9612E Regent III with a Northern Counties L27/26R body, one of twenty-two new that year, others from the batch of forty-two being delivered in 1947 and 1949, although one of the 1949 delivery, BSD441, never ran for Western, being sold to York Brothers, Northampton in March 1949. 71. CAG134 ... A 1948 delivery, one of nine, to Western S.M.T. was CAG134, a Northern Counties L27/26R bodied Leyland PD1 which became 502 in 1949, when fleet numbers were allocated to the fleet. (Wed 29/7/59, Clyde Street, Glasgow)

72. CST272 ... Highland Guy Arab II E63, CST272, one of four Guy Arab III with N.C.M.E. L27/26R bodies new in December 1947 (CST270/1) and January 1948 (CST272/3). They passed to Highland Omnibuses in February 1952, gaining the E prefix to their fleet number. (August 1961, Highland Dingwall Garage)

307. PBU959 ... Oldham bought 90 PD2s with tin fronts. They had a variety of bodies, Roe being the favoured builder, but two orders featured Northern Counties bodies, such as PBU959. These didn't quite have the elegance of the Roe body and, when new, suffered by comparison as they weren't lined out, but they were attractive buses. This vehicle has just come back from overhaul at Stockport who made a very nice job of it and it retained many more original features than it would have done if overhauled at Oldham. Because it wasn't a full five-year recertification it has retained Oldham livery as more coats of paint would have been required to ensure the orange and white livery covered the old scheme. Both were withdrawn in April 1974 passing to Ensign (dealer), Hornchurch. 788 was exported to Jones (dealer), Jacksonville, Florida. United States in October 1975 whilst 791 found further service with Golden Boy Coaches, Roydon from December 1974 until October 1975 when it was scrapped. (Sun 10/5/59)

For a number of years this included an hourly operation to Wickford over part of ENOC's famous 251 route. 380, GHJ380L, waits to leave Central Bus Station on Boxing Day 1974. 924. GHJ382L ... From 1971 onwards, Southend Transport operated special services on Boxing Day, including routes outside their normal area. The most successful by far of the out of area routes was the 400 to Kings Cross, running every two hours over the normally ENOC operated route. It was always operated by the newest double deckers in the fleet, such as 382, GHJ382L, seen here on layover between journeys, and sometimes required duplication - helped by the absence of any train services from Southend to London on Boxing Day!
