Seen outside the garage in Widnes on trade plate '0083 B' is the towing vehicle which had been new as number 39, ATD683, in 1935. The Leyland LT7 with a Massey B32R body was converted for its towing duties in 1952 and was sold to Widnes 39 Group, Liverpool in January 1968 for preservation.

New to Bury Corporation in 1938 as number 73, EN7702 was a Leyland TS8c with a Burlingham B36F body. In November 1951 the torque converter was replaced by a normal clutch and gearbox and the body replaced by a Massey H30/26R one.

EN7703 was a Leyland TS8c which had been new in 1938 as Bury Corporation 75 with a Burlingham B36F body. In November 1951 the torque converter was removed and replaced by a normal clutch and gearbox and it was rebodied with a Massey H30/26R body by which time it had been renumbered to 74 (EN7704 which had been new as 74, became 75). It passed to Paton, Renfrew number 54 in December 1958 and is seen at the garage.

EN7704, a Leyland TS8c, had been new in 1938 as Bury Corporation 74 with a Burlingham B36F body. In November 1951 the torque converter was removed and replaced by a normal clutch and gearbox and it was rebodied with a Massey H30/26R body by which time it had been renumbered to 75 (EN7703 which had been new as 75, became 74) and it passed to Paton, Renfrew number 55 in December 1958 being seen at the garage.

Colchester's only trolleybus was only used by ladies. As a mobile toilet it was towed to serve major outdoor events in the borough. The green and white livery more or less perpetuated that of its previous owner Ipswich Corporation, number 82, PV4790, a locally built Ransomes with Massey body seating 48.

Kippax Motors ASD121, seen in Leeds Bus Station awaiting its next journey, was a Daimler CWA6 with a Massey H30/26R body which had been new to Western S.M.T., Kilmarnock in 1943.

ASD254, a Guy Arab II with a Massey L27/26R body became Paton, Renfrew 46 in 1958 when it was acquired from Northern Roadways. New to Western S.M.T in 1943, it was numbered 192 in 1949 when the fleet was numbered. Withdrawn in 1956 it passed to Millburn Motors (dealer), Glasgow and to Northern Roadways in April 1958 then to Paton later in 1958 and is seen at the garage.

Southend 263, GLX913, was withdrawn in June 1962 and transferred to the Southend on Sea County Borough Constabulary, fitted with platform doors and converted as a mobile road safety exhibition unit (visiting schools, etc). Passed to Essex Police in April 1969 and sold in 1974 for preservation.

Birkenhead were allocated this Guy Arab II with austerity Massey body in 1944 Originally 324, BG8557, in Birkenhead's fleet it was rebodied in 1953 and renumbered as 242 with Massey again providing the H31/28R body. In its new guise it remained in service until 1969, a very creditable 24 years.

Southend Daimler CWA6 270, GYE60, started life with a Brush utility body with London Transport (numbered D71). Sold to Southend in 1954 and rebodied, it was withdrawn from passenger service in October 1963 and converted to a conductor training school (lower deck) cum uniform store (upper deck).

Preserved Birkenhead 105, BG9225, a Massey-bodied PD1, and Wallasey 54, AHF850, the Metro Cammell-bodied PD2/1 make an interesting comparison.

Cumberland 219, GAO757, new in March 1948 was a Leyland PD1 with a Massey L27/26R body, being one of ten similar vehicles new that year. It was rebuilt with radiused windows in 1956, withdrawn in 1959 and sold in November 1959, via an unknown dealer, passing to Mc Dowall, Glasgow in December 1960 and then to Fleet Car Sales (dealer), Dunchurch in April 1962.

Crossley DD42/3T with a Massey H30/26R body was Colchester 55, KPU519. and was the sole new bus in 1948.  It ran on trial for two weeks in November 1948 and then its torque converter transmission was replaced by a normal clutch and gearbox.

I guess we all had to learn when we started taking bus photos but I got a few things wrong here in one of my very early shots like watchout for street signs in the way, make sure the bus is in the centre of the photo, hold the camera level and don't be too ambitious taking photos of fast moving buses when you have a fixed shutter speed camera. For the record it is Southend Weymann bodied Leyland PD2 303, MHJ925.

It is a poor quality slide of mine and I am indebt to John Stringer for his efforts in scanning and improving it considerably from its original condition. The registration number looks like TVD 77 or possibly TYD 77 and the layout of the destination indicator looks to be quite unusual.

Ex-Southend PD3 CJN434C was withdrawn in 1980 and sold for scrap but was rescued and preserved by Bob Salmon. In the late 1980s, Southend Transport wanted a PD-type for driver training so it returned and stayed as a driver trainer until 1999. It is now back in preservation.

Southend PD3 CJN441C ended up with Fowler's of Holbeach Drove, while CJN434C was sold into preservation to ENPG member Bob Salmon, before being leased back for a time to Southend Transport as a driver trainer. Both buses are seen together at the Eastern National Preservation Group's 'Topless' rally in Southend in 1995.

DEK3D, a 1966 Leyland PD2/37 with Massey body, new to Wigan Corporation one of a batch of three Leyland PD2’s delivered in December 1966, given a fleet No 140. It ran for Wigan Corporation until it was taken over by Greater Manchester PTE in April 1974. At this time 140 was repainted into GMPTE’s orange livery and given fleet No 3281. It ran until the summer of 1983, when it was withdrawn and sold to the Wallace Driver Training School London.

Bedwas and Machen's final double-decker was their first that was thirty-feet long, one reason for which may have been the service reorganisations which saw the buses of the little fleet (never bigger than seven) participating in the thirty mile long service from Newport to Rhymney Bridge along with Gelligaer UDC, Western Welsh and Red and White. 6, PAX466F, was even more unusual as it was a lowbridge bus, a Massey-bodied PD3 new in 1967 and the last bus built to this configuration.
