My first ever visit to Amberley Heritage Museum (mainly to see the railway locomotives) also enabled me to see this 1929 Leyland Lion with Leyland B34F body which has been restored in its original Sunderland 2 livery. It carries the registration BR7132.

The oldest bus in the South East Bus Festival was 1929 Leyland TD1 ex-Jersey 24, J1199, now registered SV6107. Although looking a little shabby, it seems to be structurally and mechanically sound and was happily carrying passengers on the internal bus service round the site. Here it is leaving the rally site on its way to the car park entrance.

Leyland Lion RU8678 appears to be in use as a promotional vehicle at a bus rally at Stratford-on-Avon in, probably, 1970. It was a Leyland PLSC3 with Leyland B35F body, new to Hants & Dorset in 1929 and withdrawn in 1938. Does anyone know anything more of the history of this vehicle and is it still with us?

MW6288 was a Leyland TD1 new as Wilts & Dorset 80 in April 1930 with a Leyland L24/24R body. The body was rebuilt, mainly relating to the windows and the front of the upper saloon, in January 1946, by Eastern Coachworks.

Photographed at Grouville, this is believed to be the Leyland TD1 with a Leyland H27/24R body, new as a Leyland demonstrator registered TF2678 in 1930, which was acquired by Jersey Motor Transport in December 1931, registered J6041 and given fleet number 39. It was withdrawn in May 1960, passing to Jersey Motor Spares as an office/store and then to a farm at La Route des Cotils, Grouville by the late 1960s.

Preserved J.M.T. 25, J6332, running on a Trade Plate, was a Leyland TD2 with a Leyland H27/24R body new in 1932 and was seen on the A23 on the way to Brighton during an H.C.V.C. Rally when owned by Michael Banfield, London S.E.17, having been withdrawn by J.M.T. In 1960.

TJ6760 is Lytham St. Anne's 24 (previously a Leyland demonstrator), a Leyland Lion LT5A with Leyland B32R from 1934. It was imported in a poor state from Ontario, Canada in 1998, and is seen having repairs carried out. Body restoration was done in 2006.

Lytham St. Annes 24, TJ6760, a Leyland LT5A with a Leyland B32R body was seen on the A23 on the way to Brighton during an H.C.V.C. Rally. It had been new as a Leyland demonstrator in October 1934 and entered service with Lytham in June 1935.

Kippax and District bought their first double decker in 1935, a Leyland Titan TD4 with an early metal framed Leyland body. Numbered 8, AWT128, it gave eighteen years service being withdrawn in 1953.

In addition to 12 English Electric bodied Leyland TD4s, in 1935 Portsmouth took delivery of 4 more TD4s, but with Leylands own all-metal vee-fronted bodies. Roger had in his collection an official view of the first of the batch - 127, RV6370.

Given the problems that the early all metal vee-fronted Leyland bodies were reported to have suffered, Portsmouth's four examples seem to have had remarkably long service lives from 23 to 29 years (albeit that 127 & 128 were rebuilt by the Corporation in 1957). The first to be withdrawn was 129, RV6372, in 2/58, its engine and other parts being used for spares for the re-engined 1948 Crossleys.

Theobald's had two ex Plymouth Leyland TD5s, built in 1938 as TD5c (torque converter transmission) with Weymann lowbridge bodies. Of the original total of 50, eight were rebodied, most unusually by Leyland Motors in 1953, and given conventional clutch and gearboxes at the same time. (see pg161 The Leyland Bus by Doug Jack for a picture). ADR813 of the first registration batch was Plymouth 213, renumbered as 141 in 1953, was bought by Theobald's via London dealer Lansdowne in 1959

Manchester 3888, FND870, is seen here, displaying 27x, operating a cross town service from Edge Lane, Clayton to Trafford Park - a hangover from the days of the trams. The Leyland TD5 with Leyland H29/26R bodywork was new in 1939 as 888, being renumbered in the 1946 renumbering scheme.

This was one of the fifty to carry Leyland bodywork from the batch of 83 which entered service in 1939/40, the remainder being built by Crossley(2) or Crossley on Metro Cammell frames(31).

Eastbourne Corporation 12, JK8418, a 1939 Leyland 'Lion' LT8 with Leyland B34F bodywork seen in Compton Street outside the old Devonshire Swimming Baths on 13th June 1967. This was fitted with a Leyland 8.6 litre oil engine in 1954 and re-seated from B32F in 1963. One of five delivered just before the outbreak of World War II, the other four were requisitioned by the War Department and never returned though one (15) still survives, re-registered LMG184.

Scottish Omnibuses HH17, VS3640, seen in Airdrie was a Leyland TD5 with a Leyland L27/26R body which originated with Greenock Motor Services before passing to Western S.M.T. in 1949 and then to Lowland Motorways. It was acquired by Scottish Omnibuses in January 1958 with the Lowland Motorways business.

It was a Leyland PD1A with Leyland L27/26R bodywork new in 1948 to Wemyss Brothers, Ardersier. It passed with the business to W. Alexander in June 1950 and thence to Highland.

NTF9 was the only example built of the Leyland PD2/15 model. It had a pneumocyclic gearbox and, although built to the 27' length, was built as H30/26R as were the majority of the PD2/10 and PD2/12 models with Leyland bodies and NTF9 remained as such.

It was a Leyland H30/26R bodied Leyland PD2/12, the first of three new to Samuel Ledgard, Armley in February 1952, the last vehicles delivered before his death. The Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company’s number 66 was former Midland Red Leyland PD2/20 4014, SHA414, of 1952, one of four bought by ‘the Swilly’ in 1967 (64-67, SHA419/66/14/21). They lasted until 1975/6, number 66 being withdrawn in 1976 and finally being sold for scrap in March 1978.

Another of the four all-Leyland PD2/20s bought from Midland Red by Lough Swilly in 1967, 67, SHA421, carries the later grey and dark red livery in this 1968 photo at Bridge End, where Northern Ireland meets the Republic on the road from Londonderry/Derry to Letterkenny. It was withdrawn in 1975 and survived on private property until 1992 as a storeshed.

Note also the opening ventilation windows in the rear emergency exit and the rearmost upper deck side window which has been panelled over. This shows also the rear dome rain guttering fitted to Leyland bodies to minimise rainwater from the roof dripping on to the platform entrance area. It is now registered ADV852A.

Rawtenstall 18, RTC822, a 1953 Leyland Titan PD2/12 with Leyland body. This vehicle has been under going extensive renovation in Somerset with Quantock Heritage. It is now at Roger Burdett's site for internal renovation and making ready for painting. I'm told that the big question is what livery is it going to be painted in and it is not Rawtenstall or Barton. We'll just have to wait and see.

Hardwick Motors was another of Wallace Arnold's subsidiaries from 1952 and, being based in the Scarborough area, gave WA a good foothold for local excursion licences. RUA294 and SUA296 were both all-Leyland PD2/12s of 1953/1954 respectively.

Preston Corporation 59, FCK453F, was the last of the eight Leyland PD2s which Preston rebuilt. New in March 1954 as 59, FRN739, a Leyland PD2/10 with a Leyland H30/28R body, it had been rebuilt in the Corporation workshops to PD3/6 specification and the seating changed to H38/32F, entering service in September 1967.

Seen at the Preston garage in Deepdale Road is FCK453F which was the last of the Preston rebuilds. It was new in 1954 as FRN739, a Leyland PD2/10 numbered 59, with a Leyland H30/26R body.

Aberdeen-allocated NPD9, FMS726, was one of ten Alexander C41F-bodied Leyland PSUC1/2Ts, which had been new to W Alexander & Sons in 1954, and which were transferred to Alexander's (Northern) at the 1961 split. It was withdrawn in 1973 and ended its life with Dagenham Swimming Club!

One of the last bodies to be built by Leyland was fitted to FRC951, a Leyland PD2/12 with H32/26RD body which was new as Trent 1251 in 1954. It passed to Skill, Nottingham, who numbered it 60, in May 1967 and is seen at the garage.
