Huddersfield Corporation 494, OCX494F a Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX with Roe H44/31F body new in 1968.
Seen here on the former JOC Meltham to Deighton 22 service, 494 is seen in the centre of Meltham after reversing off Holmfirth Road into Wessendenhead Road. This manoeuvre was necessitated by the temporary closure of Meltham Bus Station due to works alterations.
The driver is ex Hanson driver Desmond Douglas and despite his rather large girth he always preferred half cabs! He was a really nice chap.
Prior to the opening of Meltham Bus Station in 1964 this would have been a normal manoeuvre for both the JOC (then route 78) and Hanson's Huddersfield via Helme and Milnsbridge services.
As road traffic increased it became imperative that buses could turn round safely in the village hence the Bus Station opening in 1964.
Always known as a Bus Station in fact it was little more than a turning circle built on waste ground with a large stone built shelter.
It is still in use today but in a much reduced capacity.
