During the construction of Princes Way in Bradford, an inner city ring road which obliterated the Victoria Square roundabout, it was necessary to change the traffic flow in Little Horton Lane by making inbound traffic turn left and join Morley Street, whilst outbound traffic for Morley Street came up Little Horton Lane and turned right. This involved the creation of a short connecting road named Glydegate after Glyde House, just visible on the right, and which became (along with the last bit of Morley Street) the last roads in the UK to be newly wired for trolleybuses.
The wiring was installed in April 1969, with a frog from Little Horton Lane, and came in to use from 18 May 1969. The direct inbound wiring and frog was removed on 20 May 1969 after which the traffic island seen left was constructed.
In the picture 785 GHN403 an ex Darlington Karrier W of 1943 with an East Lancs H39/32F body from 1959 is seen turning from Little Horton Lane in to Glydegate in June 1969. A West Yorkshire VR is seen behind heading for Chester Street.
After the closure of Chester Street a widened road was pushed through and Morley Street no longer joined Princes Way.
Glydegate was closed and is now an open space and for more on Glyde House follow this link.
