Huddersfield Corporation 196, UVH196 an AEC Regent V 2D2RA with Roe H39/31F body was the first of a batch of six new to the JOC in February 1962.
Still wearing its JOC livery this photo taken c.1972 shows it coming off Southgate onto the Northumberland Street roundabout before turning up Northumberland St. immediately behind the photographer.
The block of flats behind 196 was named Lonsbrough flats after the 1960 Olympics Gold medal winning swimmer, Anita Lonsbrough, who hails from Huddersfield. They modern building beyond the flats is the new Huddersfield sports centre. Behind 196 the building with the scaffolding around it is the Crown House government building still under construction.
The flats and the sports centre have since been demolished and Crown House is now an empty and derelict building that is up for sale.
Food for Thought?
In fact the roundabout is no longer there, replaced by a complex junction controlled by traffic lights.
