Former Aldershot & District No. D524 (which became 781 in the fleet renumbering of 1951), COR177, a Dennis Lancet II of 1938 with Dennis B32R body, is seen entering Mitcham Common for fairground purposes in the later ownership of a showman during 1961.
There were 28 buses in this batch, COR164 -191, which, together with thirteen contemporary coaches with Strachans C32R bodies, introduced the new compact 6.5 litre Dennis O4 diesel engine of 85bhp into the A&D single deck fleet, an engine that A&D earlier adopted for the Dennis Lance double deckers of 1937. All these Lancets were withdrawn between 1951 and 1954. COR177 itself was withdrawn in 1952, and it is a testimony to the robust quality of these machines that it was still to be seen soldiering on nine years later in the less than sympathetic ownership of a showman.
