The New Bus Grant introduced in the wake of the 1968 Transport Act prompted Dearneways to buy its first new vehicles. Unsurprisingly, they were Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopards. NWX873K and NWX874K took to the road in 1972, followed by WWY675L and WWY676L in 1973. All were PSU3B/4R Leopards with Elite Express III C51F bodies.
A further nine Bus Grant compliant Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopards followed in the years to 1979, together one to full coach specification (AWJ291T). All except AWJ291T, which was sold in 1979, passed to South Yorkshire PTE with the business in December 1981. These vehicles are represented here by WWY676L, photographed arriving at Sheffield’s Central Bus Station on the Thurnscoe service, whilst clocking up its Bus Grant mileage quota on 29 March 1975.
