Hopley's of Mount Hawke operated URL450H, a Bedford VAL 70 with Plaxton C53F bodywork, on their Truro to Porthtowan service. It had been new in 1970 to Mrs J Stevens of St Ives.
When I used to come to Porthtowan as a youngster on family holidays in the 1950s, you could often, quite literally, have the whole beach to yourselves. Even when this photograph was taken it was largely undeveloped but, since then, Porthtowan has shared to an extent in the surfing boom along the North Cornwall coast and has consequently increased dramatically in size. This, though, has benefited Hopley's whose main service now operates hourly (two-hourly on Saturdays).
