Scarlet Band (Sidney Blenkinsop) of West Cornforth operated UPT708K, a Leyland PSU3B/4R with Caetano Lisboa C51F bodywork which was new in May 1972. It is pictured at The Sands in Durham.
For those unfamiliar with Durham, The Sands is not a beach (it's about 13 miles inland) but a large expanse of grass beside the River Wear to the east of the city which is used for a fair over the Easter period and a circus later in the year, as seen here.
Until the mid 60s the buildings of the former Fire Station stood on either side of the road at this point;they were used by the City Council to house a number of former Venture Transport Daimler CVD6s which had been converted to mobile Public Conveniences and which could be used for events such as these or taken to the Racecourse (not for a very long time, before you ask!) each July on the occasion of the Big Meeting (Durham Miners' Gala).
