KGN433 is a B29F Duple Mark 1V bodied Bedford OB that was new to the Metropolitan Police at New Scotland Yard in 5/49.
The 'Boys in Blue' bought 26 OBs between 1948 and 1950 to replace old Ford army personnel carriers that they had previously used. Regularly used as transport to meetings and demonstrations etc., they were replaced in the early 1960s by newer Bedfords. KGN433 was withdrawn in 2/63 and passed to London NW1 dealer Aldridge and on to James Carruthers of New Abbey, Dumfries for PSV use.
Following withdrawal in 1968, it was bought by Chancelot Mill Ltd., (famous for its 'Lofty Peak' flour), for use as staff transport at Leith. In 3/78 it entered preservation with John Mills Patterson of Dumfries and by 8/91 was with Bob Smith of the Angus Preservation Group, who began restoration work and repainted it to its original dark green.
In 3/05 it was bought by Judith Poole & William Brayford t/a Blue Motors of Blackpool and transported on a low-loader from Montrose. Further restoration work was carried out before the seats, which were packed in boxes on arrival, were fixed back in the bus. Gold leaf signwriting was applied and its first outing was to the 70th anniversary of the OB at the Vauxhall factory in Luton, when its owners dressed in period police uniforms!
There are bars across the windows on the inside, to which prisoners could be handcuffed and the floor traps were also barred underneath, just in case prisoners tried to escape through them! It apparently featured in the tv series 'Endeavour' in 2015.
Seen here at the Yorkshire Dales Running day centred at Skipton.
