Although this is a Bus Rally scene, the backdrop to the preserved vehicles has changed significantly, as has indeed the foreground. To the buses, taking part in the 1976 Trans-Pennine Run, leading the pack is Florence Motors 23, JTB749, an AEC Regal III O962 with Burlingham C33F body. Behind is the York Pullman Regent III followed by the St. Helens RT.
To take this I was stood approximately where the Metrolink tracks now come out of Victoria to head up Balloon Street. Work is going on at present to build the Second City Crossing which branches off the original line at Victoria and will head away down where the buses are on Corporation Street into the distance. The Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror signs on the left a reminders that this was where many newspapers used to be printed then distributed by train from nearby Victoria station (you can just see the sign in the top right hand corner). The yellow-tiled facade of the Arndale Centre can be seen above the Regal - it was often referred to as the largest toilet wall in the country! Fortunately it is visually much improved now.
