Driver Bill Warwick at the wheel of 'his coach'. Bourne & Balmer, Croydon CUW561C, new in July 1965, was one of two AEC 2MU4RA Reliances with Harrington Grenadier C41F bodies in this fleet, the remainder of the batch of six being with the parent company, Timpsons, Catford.
Although fitted with a six speed crash gearbox Bill used the clutch only for moving from rest, all upward and downward changes on the move being made silently and smoothly without its use. This also involved changing down through the gears to use engine braking to slow from 70 mph to 20 mph on motorways without the brake lights being activated. Seen at the Ribble garage in Burnley on an Omnibus Touring Circle weekend visit to Lancashire.
