Walsall 823, TDH770, with a Metro Cammell H32/28R body was one of four lightweight vehicles purchased in 1954 for performance comparison purposes. The other three were:- two Daimler CVG5s, 400 and 821(7' 6" and 8' 0"), and an 8' 0" wide A.E.C. Regent V, 822, having a synchromesh gearbox and an AV470 engine. Originally recorded as a Leyland PD2/14 (pre-selector), and later referred to as a "semi-automatic", TDH770 was recorded by Leyland as a PD2/20. It had been exhibited at the 1954 Commercial Motor Show where it was described as a "PD2/20 series" model, as also was Newcastle 351, UTN 851, which had a pneumocyclic gearbox. These two seem to have had the specification which was later offered as the PD2/24.
