United RE68, SHN768F, a Bristol RELH6G with ECW C43F body new in April 1968, seen in the snowy Newcastle Jesmond depot yard on 15 February 1970 after renumbering 1268 in January 1969 when computerised detail was introduced.
In this Sunday morning shot it has been washed after arrival some time earlier from London Victoria on express route 207, this set of routes 201 upwards ran with both day and night services. With semi-automatic transmission, the more modern RELHs were used if possible in preference to the older synchromesh examples, and had a monopoly of such routes at this time. The fine dedicated olive green and cream livery remains. The United scroll fleetname has disappeared or never been carried, something a member may know something more about.
1268 had a standard but relatively short life, becoming 6132 by 11/78, exact month not known to me, it retained its comfortable coach layout in the dual-purpose series. This unfortunately didn't last long, with withdrawal in September 1980 and sale presumably for scrap a month later.
