United Automobile Services 4278 PHN178L was a Bristol RELL with ECW B50F bodywork new in March 1973. In 1985 it was converted to open top for use in Scarborough subsequently receiving the Scarborough and District identity.
It passed to East Yorkshire with the Scarborough operations in September 1986 and saw sporadic use until 1997 passing via Carl Ireland to Classic Coaches of High Wycombe. Subsequent history can be found on the excellent Robsly web site.
Subsequently preserved it has been with Mike Nash, Ockley since 2010. Interestingly whilst no issues were raised when the bus was running in Scarborough, a subsequent vehicle examiner refused to pass the vehicle for PSV use as apparently the horizontal sides mean that, at the rear, the sides are not deep enough in relation to the floor level for passengers in those seats when standing up. The Southern Vectis conversion now with Mendip Mule has sloping sides.
