In 1944 TRTB took delivery of eight new 56-seat Sunbeam S4 trolleybuses, four of which were bodied by Roe and four by Weymann. Car 16, CPY287, was one of the Roe-bodied examples. Originally fitted with wooden seating, it was fitted with upholstered seats by 1949.
Rebuilt in 1958 by TRTB, with some of the work being sub-contracted to Edmund (a local coachbuilder), it received a new Roe H35/26R body in 1961. It passed to Teesside Municipal Transport in April 1968 and was renumbered T294 in August 1970; it survived until the end of the system in March 1971 and is seen here passing the depot at South Bank.
Visible in the background is car 12, CPY310, which also dated from 1944 but which had a Roe body when new. It was rebuilt by TRTB in 1959 and received a new Roe H35/26R body in 1962; it also passed to TMT in April 1968. It was renumbered as car 14 but may never have carried its new number as it was withdrawn shortly afterwards.
The absence of an offside cab door on the Roe rebodies can be clearly seen.
