South Yorkshire were the first West Yorkshire based company to operate Leyland Atlanteans. In 1967 they took delivery of a pair with Roe bodywork to an overall design similar to buses bought by King Alfred of Winchester and West Riding at around the same time. Seen loading in Leeds prior to setting out for Doncaster is 88, PWR988E.
This pair of Atlanteans were South Yorkshire's first low height as opposed to lowbridge buses being Leyland Atlantean PDR1/2s. This variation was introduced by Leyland to compete with Daimler Fleetlines that had a drop centre rear axle from the outset
