By way of comparison with United's 4278, PHN178L, the only other Bristol RE converted to open top was Southern Vectis 864, TDL564K. New in July 1971, it was rebuilt in 1986 and painted as 'Shanklin's Pony', serving with them until 2000 before preservation on the Isle of Wight.
More recently it saw service use as the 'Mendip Mule' on the mainland (for which it lost the Pony livery) but is now with another new owner. Seen here by what used to be Shanklin pier and driven by regular driver and enthusiast Richard Newman, the poster in the front window indicating '25 years' suggests this is July 1996 although I don't have a note of the exact date.
