During the rail strikes of 1982, Southend provided extensive duplication on the X1, mainly using the newest Fleetline buses (this was the period before lots of hired coaches appeared in the fleet). In the evening peak, 234 (MRJ234W) waits to load in Aldgate (Minories Bus & Coach Station) on February 3, 1982, with a Reading Metrobus about to depart westwards. Just out of shot is Traffic Superintendent Derek Giles, supervising passengers and buses with his trade-mark megaphone!
