Southend Corporation Transport
Trams and Trolleybuses
Another photo from the English Electric collection, this time of Southend Corporation tram 57, one of a batch of six 70 seaters built by English Electric and delivered in May 1924.

It is shown in as-delivered state with open platform and wooden seats - the platform was closed in a few years later.

All of the batch lasted in theory until 1942 when the tram system closed and they were scrapped. However 57 overturned at the junction of Southchurch Road and Southchurch Avenue on Friday 19th December 1941 (without any casualties) and although it was righted and towed back to the depot, it seems unlikely that it was repaired and used again before the system finally closed on the 8th April 1942.
