The last Southend PD3's arrived in 1967, 73 seat East Lancs bodied PD3/4's, numbered 345-347, with 345, MHJ345F seen here. With air brakes and light steering, these three machines seemed quite different from their Massey bodied predecessors and for some reason I never felt as comfortable when behind the wheel.
I was sure it must have been me but tales of similar 'differences' have come from Wigan with their late Massey bodied PD2's of similar vintage, one theory being that the braking system used Atlantean components rather than normal PD3 parts as previously. It is also suggested that the rake of the steering wheel was more upright on late model PD2's and PD3's.
