Southend Corporation Transport
Highbridge Leylands

SCT took delivery of a batch of 12 highbridge buses in 1965 but clearance tests had to take place prior to entry into service. In this view, 334, CJN434C, which was the first to be delivered, is shown on clearance tests under the High Street bridge.
Derek Giles, Traffic Superintendent, is driving the bus and watching the hand signals of the person in front who, in turn, has his eye on the person on the tower wagon who is watching very carefully to see just how much clearance has been achieved.
This view was taken on January 27th but it was another eight months until 337 - click here for a photo - was the first highbridge bus to operate in revenue service under the bridge.
