Southdown 65, 65AUF, a Commer Avenger IV with Harrington Crusader C35F body, new in late 1962, alongside a Weymann Castillian-bodied Leyland Leopard of the same operator.
Though the Crusader III was in production by the time this one was built, Southdown opted for the original Mark I styling for this batch of fifteen coaches, in order to match the fifteen it had bought back in 1959/60.
I never rode on a 2-stroke Commer, but certainly heard a few going by, and often wonder if those distinctively raucous sound effects were transmitted to the passengers inside. If so, then they seemed a strange choice for an operator with such a classy and refined reputation in the coaching department.
