CUF404 is a Leyland Cub KPZ1, one of a batch of three new in July 1936 with a Harrington C14F body to Southdown Motor Services, no. 4. When new they had a folding canvas roof, but were rebuilt around 1939 with glass quarter lights and a sliding roof.
This and one other were further converted to C20F in June 1950 and it was probably this that saved them as on withdrawal in 1953 this and the other reseated example were sold to Jersey Motor Transport. The unreseated example was sold for scrap by Southdown.
CUF404 ran with JMT from December 1953 until July 1962 when it returned to the mainland for preservation. This photograph shows it soon after repatriation, on the 1964 HCVC London to Brighton Run, and still carrying the beading that was added in Jersey. More than 50 years later it is still in preservation and has been beautifully restored to full Southdown livery, with the beading having been removed.
