SHMD 109, XLG478, an Atkinson PL746H with Northern Counties B34+27CD body, one of two new in 1956.
The SHMD's former tram depot in Tame Street could only accommodate half their bus fleet. In 1962, instead of rebuilding the depot, they were able to purchase adjacent land which they concreted over and laid with electric cables. This enabled the buses to be parked in rows of five and connected to heating pods which powered small fan heaters to keep the saloons and radiators warm in adverse weather.
